Shropshire Devs back with a bang!

Shropshire Devs back with a bang!

Last week the Shropshire Dev’s meet up restarted after a pandemic enforced pause, it also represented the 10 year anniversary of first meet up of the group.

The meeting was kicked off by Shropshire Dev’s Andy Clarke welcoming the 20+ attendees making the introductions. The main event was a talk by Simon Painter on his adaptation of a 1970’s text based game “Down the Oregon Trail” using Functional C#. Simon presented an informative and amusing tale of why and how he set about the task of moving through the game in his spare time, including lots of examples of his code for the Shropshire Devs to digest.

Mid way though Simon’s talk the pizza arrived, beers and soft drinks broke out and lots of chatter and networking took place.

Simon AKA “The Code Painter” has recently had a book published by the O’Reilly Media, so having finished the second half of his talk there was a Q&A which saw Simon fielding questions from the floor about the paradigm that is functional programming and also questions about his recent book on the topic, my favourite being “did you get to choose the animal on the front?” – which the answer was sadly no.

It was a great evening of learning and networking. The organisers are looking to get back into a rhythm of a meeting once a quarter… so see you next time Shropshire Devs as Greenfield IT Recruitment have agreed to sponsor the group for the duration of 2024.
